Join Unbound Potential (UP): a Swiss startup founded in 2023 by a team of passionate engineers, chemists, and economists from ETH Zürich.
We envision a resilient, electrified society, one that is not only independent from fossil fuels, but also free from critical mined materials like lithium and vanadium. How will we get there? By developing a disruptive, innovative solution: a membrane-less redox flow battery powered entirely by organic chemistry. Despite the name, our system is one of the simplest large-scale stationary energy storage solutions imaginable - scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable - perfect for energy-intensive industries and utilities.
We are currently expanding our excellent team of disrUPtors and looking for exceptional talent to join our mission. If you’ve ever been truly passionate with something - tech, academia, sport, art - and pushed yourself to the edge of excellence, you know what it takes. That’s what we care about. We’re building a team of dreamers and builders who are all-in on doing something unique and making a meaningful impact on society.
If you feel that same urgency and ambition to shape a better world: you belong here.
As part of our Engineering team, you will contribute to the development, testing, and scale-up of our large-scale stationary battery systems, gaining hands-on experience across laboratory and pilot-scale setups.
What you will do:
-
Support the development and programming of HMIs and PLCs for our laboratory test benches and pilot-scale systems.
- Assist in selecting, testing, and integrating sensors and actuators (e.g. flow, pressure, pH, pumps, valves) for continuous-flow battery operation.
- Contribute to automation tasks across different system scales, from Arduino-based lab setups to industrial PLC environments.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical and chemical engineering teams in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Document and continuously improve system designs and outsourcing strategies.
- Contribute to software and data infrastructure topics (e.g. GitLab, data collection, monitoring dashboards), depending on your interests.
What you will bring:
- Solid programming skills (Python, JavaScript, or similar) and comfort working with development tools such as Git, Docker, and Linux.
- Experience building, monitoring, or maintaining software systems (e.g. microservices, data pipelines, observability tools like Grafana), directly transferable to instrumenting and monitoring our test benches.
- Curiosity and willingness to quickly get hands-on with automation technologies: PLC platforms (Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens TIA) and microcontrollers (Arduino). Prior experience is a plus, but not required; we will support your ramp-up.
- Fundamental understanding of, or strong interest in, electrical and control engineering principles.
- Experience with electrical CAD tools (e.g. EPLAN) is a plus.
- Interest/Background in fluid systems, energy systems, or electrochemical technologies is a strong bonus.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.
You are
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (University or University of Applied Sciences) in engineering, computer science, software development, or a related technical field.
- Motivated to work in a dynamic, high-performance, collaborative, young and fun start-up environment
- Solution-oriented mindset: focused on finding pragmatic and efficient solutions rather than dwelling on problems.
- Curious, hands-on, and eager to learn quickly.
- Structured, detail-oriented, and proactive in tackling challenges.
- Fluent in English; German is a plus.
What We Offer?
Join a highly motivated and young team. Be at the forefront of developing the next-generation large-scale energy storage solutions. Your role in the early stages of our exciting journey will make you key in developing and evolving UP, overcoming challenges, and celebrating success together.
