R&D Chemistry Intern (3-6 months)

Thalwil, Switzerland

Are you ready to drive change in the energy transition and make a positive impact on the climate? Join Unbound Potential (UP), a Swiss startup founded in 2023 by a group of passionate engineers, chemists, and economists from ETH Zürich.

We envision a resilient, electrified society, one that is independent not only from fossil fuels but also from critical mined materials such as lithium and vanadium. How will we achieve this? By developing a truly disruptive solution: a membrane-less redox flow battery powered exclusively by organic chemistry, suitable for both energy-intensive industries and utilities seeking affordable and sustainable storage options.

About the internship:

We are seeking an R&D Chemistry Intern with a strong passion for energy storage and the real-world impact of their work. In this role, you will work on development of our electrolyte system for our next-generation membrane less redox flow batteries. You will work closely with the chemistry team, designing and formulating, materials, electrolytes and redox couples.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in organic chemistry and willingness to implement it in the multidisciplinary field of redox flow battery.

About Us

What you will do:

  • Develop and synthesize (new) materials/molecules/formulations for our membraneless redox flow battery technology.
  • Perform electrochemical and physicochemical characterization of materials and electrolytes e.g. cyclic voltammetry, lab-scale battery testing, conductivity, stability analysis, spectroscopy.
  • Assist team members with electrolyte preparation, battery-cell development and testing.
  • Document your work in written form (Notion) and present your results, progress, project outcomes both within the team and at company level.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material science, with a solid foundation in Organic Chemistry.
  • Good understanding of Physical Chemistry and or Electrochemistry, exposure to Polymer Chemistry and Catalysis is an advantage.
  • Curious, solution-oriented mindset with good communication skills.
  • Familiar with good laboratory practices and willingness to take responsibility and learn.

You are

  • A maker, willing to take initiative, seek solutions, and deliver tasks efficiently.
