Mechanical Design Engineer

Thalwil, Switzerland

Join Unbound Potential (UP): a Swiss startup founded in 2023 by a team of passionate engineers, chemists, and economists from ETH Zürich.

We envision a resilient, electrified society, one that is not only independent from fossil fuels, but also free from critical mined materials like lithium and vanadium. How will we get there? By developing a disruptive, innovative solution: a membrane-less redox flow battery powered entirely by organic chemistry. Despite the name, our system is one of the simplest large-scale stationary energy storage solutions imaginable - scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable - perfect for energy-intensive industries and utilities.

We are currently expanding our excellent team of disrUPtors and looking for exceptional talent to join our mission. If you’ve ever been truly passionate with something - tech, academia, sport, art - and pushed yourself to the edge of excellence, you know what it takes. That’s what we care about. We’re building a team of dreamers and builders who are all-in on doing something unique and making a meaningful impact on society.

If you feel that same urgency and ambition to shape a better world: you belong here.

As part of our Engineering team, you will design parts and assemblies for manufacturing and play an active role in developing, evaluating, testing, and scaling manufacturing processes.

About Us

Discover our vision

What you will do:

  • Design and develop mechanical parts and assemblies optimized for high-volume manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, extrusion, and roll-to-roll, ensuring manufacturability and cost efficiency.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to fluidic systems, with particular attention to sealing and leakage-critical interfaces.
  • Collaborate closely with tooling engineers, suppliers, and R&D teams to refine designs for scalability and mass production.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, material selection, and structural validation to ensure product performance, robustness, and durability.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to reduce manufacturing time, costs, iteration cycle time, and defects.

What you will bring:

  • 5+ years of industrial experience in design for manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX, with a strong understanding of tooling and mould design constraints.
  • Strong expertise in Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly, ideally in liquid handling or fluidic systems.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering high-volume manufactured components from concept through production.
  • Solid knowledge of plastics, material behaviour, and manufacturing processes.
  • A hands-on, problem-solving mindset with the ability to effectively bridge design and manufacturing.
  • Exposure to electrochemical systems, e.g. flow batteries, fuel cells, electrolytzers (nice to have, not required).
  • We particularly encourage applications from candidates with experience in adjacent industries such as automotive, consumer products, aerospace, or other fields involving high-volume manufacturing for liquid handling.

You are

  • Motivated to work in a dynamic, high-performance, collaborative, young and fun start-up environment.
  • Solution-oriented mindset: focused on finding pragmatic and efficient solutions rather than dwelling on problems.
  • Curious, hands-on, and eager to learn quickly.
  • Structured, detail-oriented, and proactive in tackling challenges.
  • Fluent in English.
