Mechanical Engineering Intern - Prototyping & Fluidics

Thalwil, Switzerland

Join Unbound Potential (UP): a Swiss startup founded in 2023 by a team of passionate engineers, chemists, and economists from ETH Zürich.

We envision a resilient, electrified society, one that is not only independent from fossil fuels, but also free from critical mined materials like lithium and vanadium. How will we get there? By developing a disruptive, innovative solution: a membrane-less redox flow battery powered entirely by organic chemistry. Despite the name, our system is one of the simplest large-scale stationary energy storage solutions imaginable - scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable - perfect for energy-intensive industries and utilities.

We are currently expanding our excellent team of disrUPtors and looking for exceptional talent to join our mission. If you’ve ever been truly passionate with something - tech, academia, sport, art - and pushed yourself to the edge of excellence, you know what it takes. That’s what we care about. We’re building a team of dreamers and builders who are all-in on doing something unique and making a meaningful impact on society.

If you feel that same urgency and ambition to shape a better world: you belong here.

As part of our Engineering team, you will contribute to design, fabricate, and test mechanical components to drive innovation in our next-generation redox flow batteries. You will collaborate closely with our team members, comparing experimental results with simulation data to analyze the impact of flow dynamics on battery performance. Beyond contributing to battery development, you will also participate in identifying strategies for scaling up the manufacturing processes.

What you will do:

  • Design CAD models of mechanical components and assemblies for fluid handling in redox flow battery systems.
  • Build and iterate prototypes using rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing, milling, laser cutter, water jet cutter, etc., or external suppliers.
  • Support the development of experimental setups for investigating fluid flow and electrochemical processes.
  • Assist in testing, troubleshooting, and improving mechanical designs based on experimental results.
  • Collaborate with electrical, chemical, and automation engineers to integrate mechanical components into functioning systems.
  • Document designs, prototypes, and test results to support continuous system improvement.

What you will bring:

  • Solid skills in CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, or similar).
  • Good understanding of fluid mechanics principle with hands-on experience in building and operating fluidic experimental setups (or willing to learn fast).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques as 3d printing, milling, laser jet.
  • Experience designing parts for manufacturability (desired but not mandatory)
  • Hands-on mindset with out-of-the-box thinking.

You are

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
  • Motivated to work in a dynamic, high-performance, collaborative, young and fun start-up environment.
  • Strongly interested in the climate-tech space.
  • Independent and detail-oriented.
  • Passionate about driving the renewable energy transition.
  • Fluent in English.
